The World Day of People with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons
with Disabilities is observed annually on December 3rd with the goal of
advancing the rights and welfare of those with disabilities. On this day,
people all across the world become more conscious of the social, political,
economic, and cultural factors that affect people with disabilities.
Disability Day
Over a billion individuals
globally are living with a disability. They are the world's largest minority,
comprising 15% of the total population. Furthermore, one in seven people might
be disabled in some way.
Types and Definition
A disability is defined as an
illness or temporary health issue-related disease or impairment that
substantially limits one's abilities—physically, emotionally, psychologically,
or intellectually. Among the various kinds of disability are:
- Deficits of the body
- Deficits in senses
- Mental illness
- Disorders related to mental health
- Disabilities psychiatric
- Transient ailments
Discrimination and Its Obstacles
It's possible for some disabled
people to have many disabilities. A person's life can be significantly impacted
by a disability, regardless of its type or quantity. Disability can impact
educational chances as well as economic potential. It is frequently linked to
health issues. There is a greater poverty rate among those with impairments.
People with disabilities are marginalized in many countries and cultures, which
makes them feel alone.
People with disabilities have
encountered various difficulties for a long time, such as prejudice, lack of
access to resources, a lack of social support, and ignorance of disability.
These difficulties continue, even in the inclusive world of today.
Getting the right medical care is
another issue that people with disabilities must contend with. Getting access
to quality healthcare services can be especially difficult in developed
nations. People who are physically weaker frequently find it difficult to live
independently without the help of mobility aids and other supportive equipment.
Youngsters may experience difficulties going to school, and adults may find it
difficult to work. Rehabilitation procedures or treatments may occasionally
increase functionality. Unfortunately, many people in developing countries
do not have access to these opportunities, which negatively impacts their
overall well-being.
In 2006, the United Nations
General Assembly passed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities (CRPD). Accessibility and inclusion are declared to be fundamental
rights for people with disabilities by the CRPD. Nevertheless, a great
deal of work needs to be done before these rights can be fully realized.
How Should People with Disabilities International Day Be Celebrated?
Many organizations commemorate
this day with events and campaigns that highlight prosperity and well-being. A
few organizations recognize the achievements of individuals with disabilities
with award ceremonies. Guest speakers may share touching stories or

rehabilitation. The World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons was a
major product of the IYDP. This program was formally adopted by the UN in 1982.
In addition, the International Decade of Disabled Persons was proclaimed by the
UN for the years 1983–1993.
The UN
General Assembly declared December 3rd to be the International Day of Persons
with Disabilities in 1992, one year ahead of the decade's conclusion. The
purpose of this day is to raise global awareness of the rights and welfare of
individuals with disabilities."
